Who Is Toto?

Toto Pet Insurance, Inc. is a company that brings peace of mind by providing pet health insurance to pet parents if their dog or cat is injured or becomes ill.  What makes Toto unlike any other pet insurance company is our business model, which seeks to provide value to our customers in a socially conscious way.  Through TotoCares, we aim to save dogs and cats who are at risk of being put down due to cost. Toto is pet insurance with a heart!

What Makes A Company Socially Conscious?

Many organizations these days “give back.” However, as the only pet insurance provider with the B-Corp® stamp of approval coming in Sept 2018, Toto will meet the rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency from the nonprofit organization B Lab. Though Toto seeks to make a profit, our mission is always to be a force for public good.

How Is Toto Structured?

While Toto may be new to the pet insurance scene, our carrier is an industry leader with decades of market experience and superior ratings. To underwrite our insurance product, we have partnered with the carrier Independence American Insurance Company (IAIC), a company that is rated A- (Excellent), for financial strength by A.M. Best, a widely recognized rating agency that rates insurance companies on their relative financial strength and ability to meet their obligation to their insureds. (An A++ rating from A.M. Best is its highest rating).

What Is Totocares?

When you purchase Toto Pet Insurance, you not only protect the health of your pet but also the lives of other pets. We call it TotoCares, and it’s only made possible by our policy holders. We are determined to reduce economic euthanasia and give as many pets as possible a second chance.

What Is Economic Euthanasia?

When a pet is put down solely for financial reasons, in veterinarian medicine it is called economic euthanasia. We call it unacceptable. While statistical data is limited, it’s estimated that each day up to 8,000 adoptable dogs and cats have their lives cut short in shelters alone. Yet, we understand that people face hard times and must make hard choices with how they spend their money. That’s why Toto is so committed to this cause. But we can’t do it alone. We need you.

Ok, Every Company “gives Back,” What Makes Toto So Special?

We believe that to reach our mission, we need to be extra generous in our giving. That is why we have committed to contribute 1 out of every 5 dollars we earn from our insurance carrier to TotoCares. Many companies give when there is extra money left over, however, Toto gives from the very first dollar.

What Type Of Animals Are Helped Through Totocares?

TotoCares medical grants are allocated to dogs and cats that have an urgent illness or injury, good prognosis with treatment, and who are expected to enjoy a good quality of life following the necessary medical care.

Can I Make A Financial Donation To Totocares?

Unfortunately, no. Toto is legally recognized as a Public Benefit Corporation, not as a non-profit or foundation, therefore we are unable to accept donations directly. If you want to financially support less fortunate pets, we suggest making a donation to your local animal shelter, humane society or rescue, or one of the many charitable organizations that focus on discovering treatments and cures for life-threatening pet conditions.

What Can I Do To Promote Totocares In My Community?

Once you get a Toto policy, the best thing you can do is to be an advocate for our cause. How? By recommending Toto to other pet lovers and socially conscious consumers and then by sharing a TotoCares success story among your social media network.

Why Buy Pet Insurance?

Just like humans, pets can get injured and sick without warning. The good news is that huge strides have been made in veterinarian medicine, allowing our pets to often receive the same high level of care as their human companions. But those advancements have also brought higher costs, and like human medicine, the need for health insurance.

How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost?

Premiums vary depending on several factors. The main factors are species, breed, age of your pet and the zip code in which you live. Toto provides you the flexibility to choose the deductible, reimbursement %, coverage limits, and specific features you want to include in your coverage. We offer a flexible accident & illness plan that you can customize to fit your monthly budget. With just a few clicks, you can get a quote.

How Much Insurance Should I Buy For My Pet?

This is a common question. We have assisted by providing the Toto Breed Calculator which
provides the average lifetime health cost of your pet’s breed. We typically recommend getting
the highest coverage that you can comfortably afford.

Can I Use My Current Veterinarian?

Of course. You may use any licensed veterinarian in the United States. This includes emergency and specialty veterinarians, should the need arise.

Who Is Eligible For Toto Pet Insurance?

Dogs and cats 8 weeks and older that live in the U.S. We offer two base plans, CompanionCare with accident and illness coverage available to all dogs and cats under the age of 9 years, and AccidentCare, an accident only plan of coverage, for all dogs and cats that enroll after their 9th birthday. Toto covers all breeds of cats and dogs, not just black Cairn Terriers, like the one in the Wizard of Oz.

Is My Pet Covered For Life?

Yes. Toto will not cancel your pet's coverage because of its age or number of claims you have filed, as long as you are a policyholder.

What Is The 30 Day Free Look Period?

Toto wants you to be completely satisfied and offers a Right to Return Policy. You may get 100% premium refund in the first 30 days if not satisfied, as long as no claims have been submitted. Applies to newly issued policies only. Not available in all states.

Do You Offer A Multiple Pet Discount?

Yes. When you insure two or more pets, you will receive a 5% discount for each pet insured.

What Payment Methods Are Available?

We accept the following forms of payment: credit card, electronic check, or paper check. Paper
checks are only accepted for policies paid annually in full. If you choose to pay your premiums
annually, you can save $36 per year on transaction fees by calling 1-877-TOTOPET.

How Do I Update My Payment Or Personal Information?

How Do I Cancel My Policy?

If you choose to cancel your policy, you may do so at any time by calling our pet insurance specialists at 1-877-TOTOPET. See cancellation for more details.

Will My Rate Increase When My Policy Is Renewed?

We do not raise rates due to submission of claims. However, your premiums may increase at renewal based on the following factors:
-    Your pet is getting older
-    Increases in veterinary costs

What is Covered?

What Are Waiting Periods?

A waiting period is the number of days specified in the policy that must pass before coverage begins. There is a 2 day waiting period for accidents and a 14 day waiting period for illnesses. 
We have a 30 day waiting period for alternative therapies and behavioral problems and a 180 day waiting period for cruciate ligament injuries (knees) and IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease).

 
The waiting period begins on the effective date of the coverage period. As an example, let’s say you join Toto on June 20, your effective date is June 21. If your dog or cat suffers an injury on June 23 (2 days later), your pet would be eligible for coverage because the waiting period has been met. The waiting period applies only to the first year of your policy, or if you decide to increase your coverage, like upgrading your plan at renewal for example. Waiting periods don’t apply to your annual renewal as long there are no gaps in coverage.

What Are Pre-existing Conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are illnesses or injuries that occurred or existed before the policy effective date and its specific waiting periods. Pre-existing conditions are excluded by all pet insurance companies. 

Will A Condition Ever Be Considered Pre-existing At Policy Renewal?

An annual policy renewal will not cause an approved condition to be considered pre-existing, unless there has been a gap in coverage.

What Are Deductibles And Reimbursement %s?

Think of a deductible as your contribution and reimbursement % as Toto’s contribution when a medical incident occurs. Toto allows you the flexibility to select your annual deductible and reimbursement % to fit the monthly premium payment that is most comfortable for you. 

How Is The Reimbursement % Calculated?

Toto calculates claim reimbursements by first subtracting the deductible and then we apply the reimbursement %, similar to how human medical insurance works.  This way, you get the most back.

Can I Buy Unlimited Coverage?

Yes! While other pet insurance products may not offer this choice, at Toto, we think this decision should be up to you when you select your coverage.

Is There A Lifetime Maximum?

No, there is only an annual maximum, which you are able to choose.

Can I Change My Coverage Later?

Yes. You can either add or subtract coverage at any time, subject to underwriting approval.
Coverage changes include annual limit, deductible, reimbursement % and all optional benefits,
except for wellness which can be added or subtracted at renewal.

Are Alternative Medicine And Therapies Covered?

Yes. Alternative treatments such as holistic, acupuncture, chiropractic, hydrotherapy, laser
therapy, and physical therapy are eligible for coverage and included in your CompanionCare
(accident/illness) policy.

Is My Pet Covered While We Are Traveling?

Yes. As long as you are traveling within the U.S. or Canada, your pet is covered.

Extra Coverage

What Is Covered By Exam Care?

The cost of exam and office visit fees for your sick or injured pet. You can use at your regular veterinarian, specialty clinic, emergency rooms, veterinarian universities and even telemedicine. This does not cover wellness visits. 

What Are Inherited And Congenital Conditions?

Congenital condition refers to an illness, disease or condition that was present at or before birth. Inherited condition refers to the presence of an illness or condition that is determined by genetic factors. Some examples of conditions that are eligible are heart disease, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, diabetes, arthritis, and luxating patella. Widely accepted veterinarian research and studies on genetics are used to determine those conditions considered hereditary or congenital. A 30 day waiting period applies.

What Is Covered With End Of Life Care?

End of life care including burial, cremation, necropsy (autopsy) and urns are covered up to a maximum benefit of $300. There are no waiting periods and reimbursement is not subject to deductible or coinsurance. Euthanasia, when advised by a veterinarian to alleviate suffering, is covered in the base policy.

What Is Covered With Wellness?

Just as with people, regular health checkups become increasingly important as your pet grows older. Toto offers two Wellness packages to suit you and your pet’s needs, and reimbursement is not subject to deductibles or coinsurance. Wellness exams include vaccinations, flea/tick/heartworm meds, teeth cleaning, spay/neuter, etc. and accomplish the following:
-    Promote your pet’s health and longevity
-    Recognize and control your pet’s health risks
-    Detect any illnesses at their earliest stages, which may improve treatment options 

 

When Can I Buy Extra Coverage?

Anytime, subject to underwriting approval. Pre-existing conditions are still excluded. 

 

Claims

How Do I File A Claim?

Filing a claim is quick and easy. Simply download and complete our claim form. Send us the completed claim form along with the invoice from your veterinarian, and we will take care of the rest. For more detailed instructions, see Claims.

Should I File A Claim If My Bill Is Less Than My Deductible?

Yes. This amount goes towards fulfilling your annual deductible. If another incident occurs later
in the year, you have less of a deductible to meet.

 

How Long Do I Have To File A Claim?

We understand that dealing with a sick or injured pet can be stressful, and we want you to be
able to focus on caring for your pet during that time. For this reason, we request that you send
us a completed claim form and itemized invoice within 180 days.

How Do I Get Paid When My Claim Has Been Approved?

Claims are reimbursed by check. Please make sure your mailing address is up to date to ensure
a speedy return.

How Long Will It Take To Process My Claim And Receive Reimbursement?

Claims are typically processed within 3-4 days after we have received all of the necessary
medical information from your veterinarian.
